Caesarea & Acre

Caesarea was a major port city built from scratch by King Herod, about 2,000 years ago. Complete with a deep water port, bath houses, temples, theaters, a hippodrome and all the necessities of a proper Roman city.

I will guide you through this ancient city and show you the highlights. The mosaics, the palaces, the streets, the place where St. Peter was incarcerated, and even the public toilets. We will see the remains of the Crusader fortress built on the ruins of this Roman city.

Speaking of Crusaders, let’s go to the Crusader capital in the Holy Land – Acre. Richard Lionheart and King Phillip of France made Acre their capital in 1192 AD. The Templar and Hospitaller orders built their fortresses there, the Genoese, the Pisans and Venetian mercenaries and merchants built quarters there. Many of their buildings still remain today. The Crusader halls are the most impressive crusader buildings you’ll see. The Templar tunnel was discovered totally by accident!

And the city is still alive today. So we’ll have a great Humus lunch next to the large mosque, wander through the market and watch local kids jump off the city walls into the sea.

We’ll round up the day with a lookout over Haifa and the gorgeous Baha’i gardens on Mt. Carmel.
